By the Amstel River, Netherlands. Early morning. Early spring.
This is a very manageable photo challenge for a P-plate snapper like me.
I have trouble controlling depth of field and getting the right balance of light and dark – all that tricky technical stuff.
I do however know a good shape when I see one. Anything outlined against a glorious sunrise is worth pulling out the camera for. After that it’s just point and shoot.
Sculpture by the Sea, Sydney 2012. R.M. (Ron) Gomboc – Repose. No reposing necessary in this case.
I can emphasise the shapes and textures by converting the shot to black and white at the stroke of a keyboard.

The lonely tree on the skyline is a cliche that works time after time, This is the Bemelenberg in Limburg, Nederland.
Sculpture is an excellent subject. It poses patiently while you choose the best angle, and someone else has already done the hard work. This is Alex Kosmas’s ‘Nexus’ from Sydney’s Sculpture by the Sea 2008.

I was going to suggest going for black and white but I see you have done it. I have a black and white one that I want to use for this challenge – finding it on the computer is the problem.
Oddly though I like the colour one. Where was it taken? I lived in Sydney for a while.
Anyone who’s lived in Sydney would know this place, though you wouldn’t recognise it from the photo. It was taken above Bondi Beach yesterday morning. Thanks for the encouragement and the visit.
I said I lived in Sydney, not Bondi!! Potts Point and Kings Cross actually – where all backpackers and travellers end up, although some do go to Bondi. It was also nearly 30 years ago
Yes, the backpackers are still in Bondi and Kings Cross (Potts Point has moved upmarket). Fortunately the beach is still the same as 30 years ago, though the wonderful Sculpture by The Sea event is only 18 years old.

Thanks, Lensmaster. It was taken on my first morning and first bike ride back in the Netherlands after six months away. I sat by the water for some time, photographing various people as they rode past those trees.

All joking aside, your silhouettes at the Amstel River is gorgeous – just the faintest tinge of warmth in the air, so still, and flat and quiet – and redolent of stories untold.
Thanks, I was pleased with it too. Very early morning shot, so I felt I’d earned it by getting out there at crack of dawn. Jetlag helped!

I missed Sculpture by the Sea this year! It was a little rainy on the weekend mornings when I planned to go (yes lame excuse I know!) and I couldn’t bear to go later in the day to battle the crowds. Great shots, but I think my fav is the first one with the silhouette of the trees and the reflections. It might have been even more interesting to have composed that shot symmetrically – just a thought!
