WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE: CHANGING SEASONS – Amsterdam

Riding through Amsterdam’s Vondelpark is pleasant in almost any season, however…

There’s nothing more miserable than an Amsterdam winter. Sure, there may be the odd crisp, clear day with merry skaters on the canals, but the fun never lasts.
Not my Vondelpark photo this time - it's from the Volkskrant newspaper.

Icy bike paths make for treacherous riding. Not my Vondelpark photo – it’s from de Volkskrant.

Grey sludge with drizzle becomes the default weather setting, with people heading to school and work in the gloom and not getting home till after dark.

Fortunately Mevrouw T and I are able to miss the worst of it and migrate like swallows to the sunny southern climes of Australia.

But it is always great to come back to The Netherlands just as people are getting excited again and the lovely Vondelpark across the canal from us comes to life.

  1. Haha it is not so bad! And because of those dark winter days we appreciate the beautiful summer days even more! I really like living in an area where the days can be so different because of the season.

  2. The onset of Spring always makes me happy, everything starts coming to life and the world becomes bright and colourful again. We don’t see it so much on the coast in Queensland, however we often head to places like Toowoomba and Mt Tamborine where the change of season is more obvious. How miserable and cold does it get in Amsterdam? I’ve always wanted to spend a year living in Europe but I don’t have a clue how cold the winters actually get.

    • I’m looking forward to coming up to Queensland in January, though I expect it will be too hot and humid for my liking at that time. I expect I’ll be working indoors most of the time, with a/c turned to Industrial Strength.

Still probably better than January in Amsterdam.

  3. I couldn’t take gray, wet and cold. I’d rather be in chilly sunny Minnesota thank the awful damp chill. We are finally getting some snow too so I hope to get out an enjoy it!

Aren’t you at least tempted to correct these poor dears who don’t know their plurals, singulars and possessives? Are you an apostle for the apostrophe? Don’t you hate “battery’s” and the like? Saturday night rant …… love your posts Richard, thanks for all the photos and your erudition.

  10. Thanks M, above. I try to get my apostrophes right, though I know it’s not easy for everyone.

And I can empathise with those who struggle. In Dutch the plural of foto is foto’s. I think. But maybe it’s…um…I can’t be sure. Perhaps I saw “foto’s” on a board outside a chemist’s shop and assumed they had it right.
