ONE WORLD CUP AUSTRALIA CAN WIN – and so can Holland

The flag flies after an Aussie win.

No, not THAT World Cup. We Aussies know our place in the football world. A blow or two punching above our weight would be a satisfactory result.

But in the Hockey World Cup, Australia and Nederland have made it to the finals in both Mens’ and Womens’ tournaments, so it’s worth a trip down to Den Haag to share the fun.

It's all go out at Kyocera Stadion, Den Haag.

The Aussie fans are on the edges of their seats, partly because the seats are too small for our backsides.

Two fans in particular look relaxed and confident.

It's nail-biting stuff, but eventually the Aussies scrape through to the final after a penalty shootout. Great goalkeeping saves them.

All in all, a great event, really well-organised and friendly. The atmosphere among the spectators was good-natured and happy. We particularly enjoyed the comment of the American lady we met, who’d been playing in the veterans tournament being held in Rotterdam. ‘We came second,’ she said, ‘…in every game. But we had a great time.’

Roll on the AUS v NL finals!

STOP PRESS: Womens’ final: NED 2 – AUS 0.
Men’s final: AUS 6 – NED 1.

Both very fair results. Thanks for hosting a super World Cup, Den Haag.

  1. Richard, can I trade a win over The Netherlands next week in football for two losses in hockey? Perhaps not.

  2. Caroline

Hi boys – ‘waves’. You must be torn Richard.

  3. Ina

Michael will be on the radio “met het oog op morgen” Zaterdag avond. ze wilden graag an australier die naar het voetbal kijkt en iets over hockey zegt.
Hij is zo sportief……. ik heb mijn oranje hoed klaar liggen.
    Enjoy the dutch summer. XX

  4. How exciting and what great finals they will be, good luck to both the men’s and women’s team!

  5. I’m torn between teams. Great news in the hockey, but in the football it may not be pretty.

    • I’d be happy for NL to win the football as long as (1) the Socceroos aren’t embarrassing. 1-6 would not be good and (2) if they do knock Australia out of contention, the Dutch then have the responsibility of going all the way.
