OSCAR WILDE’S TOMB – dekissed but not unfriended

Not only were the lipstick kisses unsightly, but the angel lost a certain small but important part of his anatomy.

Ah, that explains it! I wondered why yesterday there was a sudden, unprecedented surge of hits on my post about Paris’s Pere Lachaise cemetery.

Mevrouw T solved the mystery by pointing out to me that they’ve finally cleaned up Oscar Wilde’s tomb and given it an official opening. For the full story, click here.

I’ll have to search for an image of Jacob Epstein’s statue to see if the angel’s member, pilfered shortly after his unveiling in the 1920s, has been reinstated.

Oscar would be pleased to be once again the centre of media attention. As he famously observed, ‘The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.’
