A festival of mobile food? I like the idea very much.

Amsterdam’s Rollende Keukens (Rolling Kitchens) weekend at the Westergasfabriek wasn’t blessed with good weather this year, but plenty of us turned out to sample it anyway.

Now we know what happened to all those VW Bongo vans and the baked bean-shaped caravans that mysteriously disappeared after the 70s – they were turned into mobile food outlets. And very charming they are too.

Who cares what the food is like (though it wasn’t bad either) when there is such a spectacular selection of converted vehicles on display?

It's not necessarily the 'worst' food. 'Worst' is Dutch for 'sausage.'

  2. We will have Restaurant Day next Saturday, an event that started here in Finland two years ago and is spreading around the world. Four times a year at a fixed date anyone can open a restaurant for a day and people sure are enthusiastic about it here. More than 300 will be opened in Helsinki alone. In Amsterdam 15, I saw at their website: http://www.restaurantday.org/

    • Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Teresa Maria. It sounds like a great event. Thanks, Finland, too!

I see the Amsterdam edition of Restaurant Day has a Facebook page – worth checking out.
