KIDS IN THE PARK – King’s Day, Holland

If nobody buys them I'll eat them myself.

So here we go. After the royal succession last year, Koninginnedag (‘Queen’s Day’) has become Koningsdag, as Willem Alexander’s birthday is celebrated with a festival of orange across the nation.

The actual day of W-A’s birth, 26th April, is conveniently close to when the event used to be celebrated, former queen Juliana’s birthday, 30th April. (The King’s mum, Beatrix, was born in January, when the weather is generally not conducive to a giant street party.)

Amsterdam’s ever lovely Vondelpark is reserved for the kids of the city to earn some pocket money by performing, running games of skill and chance and selling surplus Barbies and Bob the Builder DVDs.

My camera was there too, for a fun day out.

  1. I especially like to goldfish race! Did you have a go at the 5 metre bike challenge?

  2. We enjoyed the event last year but I must say I was overwhelmed with orange. I never knew an entire population of seemingly sane people could be so devoted to my least favorite color.

    • Love the photo from the little cook. Makes me remember the one time I was selling stuff on Queen’s Day as a kid. Funny thing is I always hear stories about people who go guard their spot up to twelve hours before. They claim to make between 200 and 700 euro’s in one day selling. I think they are secret market sales people claiming a free spot for the day. As a kid the profits did not even equal a cone of ice cream. Some people even tried to get a bargain on an old umbrella! 😀

      • My wife knows the trick – go to the ‘Vrij Markt’ late in the day, when everyone is thinking what a lot of trouble it will be to tote their unsold junk home again. She found me an excellent pair of brand new shoes for 10 euros. Very nearly my size too.
