On the eastern coast of the southern lands lies a city where streets are paved, canals are used to transport goods and commerce rules over all who live there.
Walls surround the city like an impregnable fortress, cannons surround to protect the people who live there, and the moat drowns all who dare lay siege.
Many ships come and go from the ports, both to trade and to restock.
People haggle over the most pointless of items to score a good price, and quartermasters yell at the crew to hurry up with the unloading or loading of the ship.
But every good thing has a price, and here it is an auction on the price of life for anyone to buy as long as money is provided.
The ones whose lives are being forfeited were either criminals or innocent people who happened to be in the right place at the wrong time.
From humans to even dragons sold as merchandise, but dragons are so rare that there is only one recorded instance.
And one day, two half-elves were being auctioned off, their ears cut to resemble human ones, clothes straightened to ensure a high price.
And as usual they were sold to a rich farmer in need of a helping hand, their small bodies were not so efficient but that did not matter, their silence was a nice bonus, after all who would want a noisy servant but what was peculiar was that no matter what happened the two of them were never seen far apart from each other.
Like if fate tried not to separate them no matter what, on one of the days during the night where everyone fell asleep the two of them looked up into the sky watching the moon pass and wishing that at least one of the stars would appear but none did.

The two talked, having no name, they chose to name themselves.
The taller and more confident one was named by the weaker and smarter one and vice versa.
The taller one was named Jean, while the smarter one was named Tesla, and as such, they decided to bond with a singular last name, Vane, which was the name of the farm they now work at.
Day after day, the twins worked, desiring to be free, and on one of the starless nights, they finally decided to run.
And so they began running, it was as if the moon itself was helping them run, guiding them across the fields and forest, and so they were finally free.
As the forest became weaker, they fell unconscious, for the hunger they experienced was too much to handle.
Once they woke up, they were in a comfortable bed with a preacher caring for them and telling them that they are going to be safe no matter what.
He called himself Brother Peter of the Moonlit church, he was taking care of them, and while he couldn't offer them much food, he offered them safety and a place to stay in a world that did not want them.
But Jean felt that they deserved better, they deserved to be free from hunger, and as such he always got in trouble for stealing food from the markets. But he knew he couldn't stop, for Tesla was too weak and Brother Peter was nearly scraping enough funds for the church in the slums of the metropolis of Cerillia that they now live in.
And as years went on Jean became more proficient and more cunning while Tesla became resourceful and learned to read and his mind rushed with ideas that no child could come up with but both had one goal in common.
They desired change.
