Chapter 78: The Distance of Clouds and Water

Chapter 78: Clouds and Water, a Tale of Fate

Program Dad followed his daughter's instructions, intentionally putting on a serious face, scowling at Xu Shaoyan. "What are you doing here so late?" he asked gruffly.

Xu Shaoyan stood up straight, not backing down. "I came to see Cheng Xi," he said firmly.

Program Dad raised an eyebrow. "Cheng Xi is sleeping. You should leave now."

But Xu Shaoyan didn't budge. "I'll wait for her to wake up," he said stubbornly.

Just then, the phone rang. Program Dad picked it up and listened for a moment before hanging up. "It's Mo Wei," he said to Xu Shaoyan. "She says you've been in an accident and are being treated at the hospital."

Xu Shaoyan's face went white. "What? That's impossible! I was just here..."

But Program Dad had already turned away, dialing another number on his phone.

Cheng Xi woke up to the sound of her phone ringing. She rubbed her eyes, still half asleep. Who could be calling at this hour?

She picked up the phone and heard Mo Wei's panicked voice on the other end. "Xi, it's terrible! Xu Shaoyan has been in an accident and is being treated at the hospital!"

Cheng Xi sat up straight, her heart racing. What? That was impossible! She had just seen him two hours ago...

But Mo Wei's words were like a cold shower, waking her up instantly. "What...what happened?" she stuttered.

"I don't know," Mo Wei said tearfully. "I only know that he's in critical condition and the doctors are fighting to save his life."

Cheng Xi felt like she had been punched in the gut. This couldn't be happening! She had just seen him, and now...

She threw off her covers and got out of bed, her mind racing with thoughts of Xu Shaoyan. What if he didn't make it? What if...

No, no, no! She pushed those thoughts away. He would be fine. He had to be.

"Xi, are you there?" Mo Wei asked anxiously on the other end of the line.

Cheng Xi took a deep breath and tried to calm down. "Yes...I'm here," she said shakily.

"I'll come pick you up," Mo Wei said. "We have to go to the hospital."

Cheng Xi nodded, even though Mo Wei couldn't see her. She would go to the hospital and make sure Xu Shaoyan was okay.

But as she waited for Mo Wei to arrive, Cheng Xi's mind kept wandering back to the same question: what if?
