Chapter Eighteen: Almost Got Kidnapped
Sitting in the car, I was bored looking at the scenery outside the window. But after a long time, we were still circling around in one place, and I couldn't help but ask the uncle who drove me home: "Excuse me, is there something wrong?"
"Ah? No, no, nothing." The uncle stuttered in response to me, with a hint of fear still visible in his eyes.
I continued to ask him, looking at his eyes I knew he must be hiding something from me: "Is there really nothing? If anything happens, you can tell me, and I'll do my best to help you."
The uncle heard me say this and suddenly slammed on the brakes, turned his head to me and said: "Miss Han, don't be too hard on me, okay?"
"Why?" I asked in puzzlement.
The uncle looked at me hesitantly for a long time before finally speaking up: "Actually, I came to kidnap you."
"What? You're saying you're going to kidnap me?" I stared at him in shock and shouted.
"I'm sorry. I didn't think it through, my wife is still in Lao Da's hands. Lao Da said that as long as I bring you back, he'll let my wife go and give me a sum of money, so I can run away with her." The uncle turned his head and continued: "But I couldn't do it."
"Can you tell me exactly what happened? If I really have to exchange your wife to solve it, I'm willing." I said firmly.
The uncle looked at me again, but this time I could see from his eyes that they were filled with gratitude: "Miss Han, thank you for being willing to help me. Because of your words, I even more cannot take you hostage. Moreover, the boss has been so good to me, how can I betray him?"
"But what about your wife? And why did your brother want to kidnap me?" I looked at him in confusion.
The uncle looked at me and lowered his head, saying with a deep meaning: "There's a story here. In the past, the 'Night' gang had four leaders: Nan Gong Ye, Feng Zhen Chen, Hu Yan Xiu, and Chen Hao Nan. Everyone thought Nan Gong Ye was the leader, but the real leader was just one of the four. The leader was very jealous, wondering why he wasn't the leader when he was only one of the four. So, to become number one, the leader started selling drugs, but soon got caught by the gang leader and lost his position as one of the four leaders, being demoted to a regular old guard. And that's when I started following him too. The old guard often beat us up, taking our lives for even small things that didn't go smoothly."
"Ah!" I exclaimed in surprise, realizing my rudeness: "Sorry, I didn't mean to. But why don't you leave him if he treats you like this?"
"Leave?" He dryly laughed twice: "How dare we leave, he always uses the people closest to us to threaten us. I've even seen cases where leaving him cost someone their daughter's life, and that girl went mad from then on. So this time, even if you take me back, my wife and I might not survive either. And yet I still remember what Eldest said to me when he finished his task and I was about to leave."
"What?" I asked curiously.
He let out a bitter laugh: "Sister-in-law, not bad, she's a beauty." From this sentence alone, I knew my wife had already been tainted by him. Because in the past when he said this to others, those people's relatives had all been tainted by him, it's just that I didn't think I would have today too. He paused and then said: "Now if I hand you over to him, you will also be...".
"Are you saying he's taken a liking to me, which is why you've been sent to capture me?"
"No, he caught you to blackmail the boss. Because he saw that the boss was willing to take a bullet for you, he thought the boss would also be willing to hand over his position of power to help you."
