Chapter 30 / Escape The Demonic Dungeon

I don’t want to get high, BUT-

The mushrooms that repairs sanity are heavily psychedelic. Although it is my fault that Eva’s and I’s sanity were damaged, it did not mean that I wanted to be high on mushrooms. I’m just trying to get our sanity back to a hundred percent!

Okay- Maybe, I'm a little excited to get high again, but who wouldn’t!

I’m currently standing on top of the dead Zombified Blattaria Anathema. There were no obvious mushrooms on it when it was alive, but after it was dead for a while, the reanimating mushrooms started sprouting all over the thing.

Parts of the thing squirm every once in a while as I step over it. The mushrooms are still attempting to bring this thing back to life. It doesn’t even register as deceased at the moment.

(Zombie Bile Pile / level 14)

I wrinkle my nose as gasses spurt out the side. “Gross.”

I pluck a few more mushrooms and throw them to a growing pile next to this thing. I want to take extra with us when we leave the dungeon because Instant Thought uses sanity as a resource and you never know if we might fight demons that can do psychic damage. Also we might feel… recreational, on our journey.

  I glance over at Eva-

  (Cultist / level 51)

Who is still not awake yet. I wonder where we will go. I touch my neck to feel the tattoo that’s now there. I’m kind of stuck with her now that I’ve got this collar on me and I’m surprisingly okay with that.

This world seems interesting enough that I’ll definitely be entertained no matter where I go. Since Eva is my new master, I go wherever she wants to go.

I slightly recoil at the thought. The idea of being a slave is still kinda unnerving to me. I mean, I did it to myself, and I knew what the collar did. It’s just the idea of being owned is slightly off. I’m technically Eva’s property now and I don’t think I like that.

Welp, what’s done is done, and there was no other way to earn Eva’s trust than to put all my trust into her. I just hope she doesn’t abuse my new status as her slave too badly.

The zombified pile of flesh jiggles as I jump off it.

I also have stat points that need to be distributed. It’s tempting to just keep stacking Durability, but I decide against it after seeing how far behind some of my other stats are. So put 5 points each into Agility, Endurance, and Intellect.

I feel my stamina bump only 2% from endurance getting a whole level's worth of points into it. I frown as I realize that I won’t be able to dump points mid-fight in order to get stamina back. I must have so many points already put into it that just 5 more won’t do much. If I ever wanna pull that same trick again, I better have a lot of points ready.

I get points added automatically at every level, so maybe it would be better to save the points I get so I can distribute them when I need them. I think I’ll do that from now on.

Oh! I almost forgot! I haven't checked the description for Pain Ignorance yet.

  Pain Ignorance / Level (4)

(You have reached an epiphany when it comes to your sense of pain. That it is simply an alarm and you should ignore your responsibilities.)

  Pain doesn’t matter

  “Narly.”

Cringeworthy comments aside, I sense Eva stirring. I go to sit down next to her as she slowly comes to.

  “Good morning!”

She sits up and covers one of her eyes and groans, “What happened?”

“You fainted after you saw my arm.”

Eva covers her mouth and looks at me. She blinks as she sees what's left of my arm.

“Don’t worry, I treated it myself. I used part of the cloth on my armour to make bandages and when the armour fixed itself, I got to keep the new material!”

She leans down closer at my arm. It now ends right after the elbow and I have fresh bandages covering the wound. “I… see.”

I grin at her, “So, what do you want to do?”

“I want to leave this place.”

“Y’know, I had a sneaking suspicion you might say that, but we have a bit of a problem.”

She furrows her brows as she looks at me, and then she suddenly starts to look around the room. “W- Where’s the exit?” She stands up and starts to slightly panic, “Are we stuck here?!”

“Actually, that’s the good news! And the bad news-”

I flick my wrist and use Linked Soul to activate Magical Aura Perception within Eva’s soul. Her jaw drops as she looks around us and through the walls.

  “-Is that we’re completely surrounded.”

Dozens of massive souls appear all around, all of them twisted and contorted in violent ways. Each as powerful as the Zombified Blattaria Anathema. A pink sphere of metallic metal, a cloud of blue ice, a ball of dark green lighting, a cube of burning red rock and lava, and many more.

“I’m glad that there isn’t a way into this room at the moment. We’d be screwed otherwise.”

Eva looks back at me, and she hangs her head as worry fills her face. “What are we supposed to do?”

I grin at the elf woman. “Well, let's think about it. First, let's consolidate all the facts about the situation we are in. So, what do we know?”

She slowly shakes her head. “I- I don’t know.”

I sigh and get up, “The Zombified Blattaria Anathema was being controlled by Abatu to bring us to him, but why was this zombified monster following his orders? Well, I’m pretty sure that this monster was created by Abatu.”

I kick the Zombie Bile Pile and gooze flows from its side. “Given that he literally called himself Abatu The Abomination, I think it’s safe to say that he created all the abominable monsters.”

Eva winces at the disgusting pile of flesh and I continue. “My bets are on the fact that the monsters around us right now are also created by Abatu! I think he might have called them to him when he was being banished.”

“So, you know where they came from. How does that help us escape?”

“Think, Eva.” I went to point at my temples, but only my left hand succeeded at the gesture, “These are likely monsters over level hundred. Do you really think this cube of rock can stop them? Look at them. Tell me what they are doing.”

Eva looks over at the wall of souls surrounding us. She tilts her head at the shining pink ball of metal. “They’re… Doing nothing?”

“Exactly! They are just sitting there! They aren’t attacking us, they aren’t attacking each other, they are just… Waiting.”

  Eva frowns, “Waiting for what?”

“Orders, I think! But y’know what the problem with that is?”

Eva groans and covers her eyes, “Abatu is gone.”

“Yepop. Now that Abatu is in hell, they are going to be waiting for the next order for the rest of eternity.”

I look down at Eva and she looks exhausted. Hell, I’m tired too, and this nightmare scenario doesn’t really put one at ease. I glance through the group of massive souls all around us. The estranged warped souls with their confused mana flows. I can feel them-

“But, I don’t think we’re going to have to wait that long.”

Eva looks up at me, “What do you mean?”

“I have two theories that will let us escape. One is that eventually the monster’s will leave by themselves. Abatu wasn’t in perfect control over the Zombified Blattaria Anathema. It killed Jammie without his permission, disobeyed his orders. These monsters could be the same and they will become more autonomous without orders.

“But maybe that monster was an outlier, and the monsters strictly follow orders no matter what. If that’s the case we could just… walk past them.”

Eva stammers, “A- Are you saying we can leave, and the monster won’t do anything?!”

I shrug, “I know for a fact the monsters weren't ordered to kill us, because we aren’t dead yet. The only thing stopping them otherwise is them not knowing where we are.”

Eva joins me in looking out into the walls of souls surrounding us.

“So Eva, do you think they can see us?”

  “... I don’t know.”

  I frown, “Me neither.”

I sigh and try to scratch the back of my head with my right hand. I scowl as I reach with nothing. God dammit! Why did I have to lose my dominant hand?!

I grimace and turn back to Eva, “I think we should wait and see. If they leave after a few days, then we can leave. If they stay, we can leave anyway and we’ll see if they react to us.”

Eva turns to me with wide eyes. “That- That sounds good.”

I tilt my head as I look at Eva’s face. “Is there something wrong? I mean, other than our impending deaths?”

Eva closes her eyes and shakes her head. “No, I just want to leave as soon as-”

I hear a squelching sound come from her and Eva blushes and covers her stomach. I start giggling to myself as she tries to get words out, but fails.

“So elves do need to eat!”

Eva punches me in the shoulder and it of course doesn’t hurt. “Ow.”

“It’s been weeks since I last ate, okay! I can still go for a few more days without food!”

I grin at the elf. “What do elves eat anyway? You can’t eat meat right?”

“Yes. We eat fruits, vegetables, and other kinds of plants.”

I raise an eyebrow, “What about mushrooms?”

She blinks a few times, “I can eat mushrooms, why?”

I walk away from her without answering and walk towards the pile of mushrooms I collected earlier. Eva follows me with her eyes, but smiles with excitement when she realizes what I’m walking towards. “How did you get mushrooms?!”

I pick up one of the mushrooms and toss it to her. As she catches it, I explain, “They are reanimating mushrooms. They are what controls the zombies and they’re the mushrooms I told you about. They can repair your sanity, but I should warn you that-”

  Eva ate the mushroom-

I stop and stare at her as she looks at me with an innocent smile. “What?”

Oh, shit- “Oh, shit-” Oh, shit- “Okay, don’t panic, but you’re about to see things that aren’t real. Things are about to get really strange, but you have to not panic, alright!”

Eva frowns at my sudden panicked energy, “What do you mean?”

“I don’t have much time to explain. These mushrooms act extremely fast, so just remember that everything that happens from this point onward, isn’t real. Okay, can you do that for me?”

Eva blinks a few times and tilts her head, “Okay?”

“Alright, so just sit down and we can wait it out.”

I pull Eva to the ground and I sit in front of her. I grab her hand and look into her eyes. After a moment of intently staring at her, her frown deepens. “What’s going on?”

“Just ignore it, nothings happening right now.”

“Yeah, I can see that. I mean, what are you doing?”

I frown, “Are you not seeing things?”

“I see a human staring directly-” Her eyes start to rapidly dilate and she starts squeezing my hand really hard. “What the fuck?!”

A part of me is really worried, but the other part finds this really fucking funny. I suppress a grin and try to reassure her. “Think of a safe place Eva. Somewhere you can relax and no one can hurt you.”

She blinks a few times and starts looking around rapidly, “OKAY!”

I let out a snort as she called out at the top of her lungs. I grin as a tendril of soul fire extends out of my back and I grab another mushroom. I fling it towards me and I catch it with my mouth. I eat the mushroom and turn back towards Eva.

“Don’t worry Eva, I'm coming for you!”

She looks up with her mouth agape, “OKAY!”

My chuckle turns into full blown laughter as the world starts peeling apart-

  ---

I wake up with Eva’s face right next to mine. I blink as she slowly coo’s in her sleep. I blush and rapidly stand onto my feet. I feel around my body in a panic.

I’m still wearing my armour. That's good, for a moment there I thought-

Eva grunts and she sits up and cracks open her eyes. She groans as she rubs her temples. “Did I faint again? My head is killing me.”

I sigh, “You didn’t faint, you’re just hungover.”

  “Hungover? I didn’t drink?”

I snort, “What we just did was worse than drinking.”

I look at Eva as she slowly starts to remember what happened last night. Her eyes widened. “What was that?”

I grin, “Magic without mana. They’re called psychedelics. They make you hallucinate and are, in general, a good time… Most of the time. Check your stats for me!”

Eva opens her status screen and looks at it. Her eyes widened as she read her intrinsic status. “My sanity is at 89%!”

  “Congratulations!”

Eva suddenly frowns and looks at me with stern eyes. She sighs, “Yes, I know you told me they repair sanity, but this mushroom is amazing! Do you know what it takes to repair your sanity? Only a special type of healing magic that only Clerics are able to perform, but this mushroom, with no modifications, was able to increase the intrinsic stat sanity by 7%! So, cut me a little slack for being surprised.”

I tilt my head at Eva. Did she think I was being sarcastic? That’s weird. “Sure?”

Eva then glances over at the walls around us. “They’re gone?”

I look the other way she did. “Not all of them.”

All the souls of the horrifying monsters seemed to have left. All except for one. A cloud of blue ice spirals in on itself slowly as its mana oscillates from inward and outward like a pendulum.

My soul when I first was able to see it, was about the size of a baseball. Now however, my soul is large enough to fill my upper torso when I’m not manipulating it. The soul in front of us is about the size of a fucking car.

  I wanna see it-

“I guess we should make our epic escape from this cube now. Fill your pockets with as many drugs as possible and let’s skedaddle.”

Eva sighs as she gets up and looks out at the ice-like soul. Her gaze breaks away as she looks around confused. “Where’s Toulif?”

I pause, “I uhh… Moved him. I didn’t think you needed to be around that. He’s on the other side of the Zombie Bile Pile.”

“Oh, thank you Tiffany.” And she walks past me.

I blink at my name, “Tiff is fine.”

She looks back but keeps walking, “Yes? Tiff it is then.”

I grin at Eva as she uses the shortened version of my name. Eva walks around the pile of flesh and looks down at her brother. She looks on with a neutral expression save for a barely noticeable frown. Eva unceremoniously snatches the mask off his face and tosses it at me.

I effortlessly grab the mask out of the air and look at its face. A completely pitch black mask with no shape engraved into the middle. “Didn't this used to have a triangle on it? A green one?”

“It did, but now that Toulif is dead, it’s no longer bound to him. I want you to have it.”

  “Sweet! I like free stuff.”

I flip the mask around and put it on. It doesn’t have a strap, but when I pressed it against my face, it stuck there. Is it magic? Before I could contemplate it for too long, the entire mask became see-through. So that’s why they could see with no eye holes!

I look over at Eva, who stares at me with a raised eyebrow. “Interesting pattern. First one I saw that wasn’t a closed shape.”

I frown and take off the mask to flip it back around. On the front of it rests a dark red spiral engraved into the center of it. “What does that mean?”

Eva tilts her head and places a finger on her chin, “They’re called identity masks. As you can guess, they conceal your identity. But to do that, the mask gets a print of your identity and places it on the front of the mask. The mask then changes the shape so it changes your perceived identity.”

Eva then picks up her own mask and the shape on the front of it changes. The red hexagon becomes a golden five pointed star. She puts it on and turns to me. “Observe me.”

I blink as I realize that I don’t automatically try to assume she is a guy anymore.

  (Cleric / level 51)

“Woah, that’s cool. How do you do that?”

“Just think of what part of your identity you want to change, and imagine it as something else. It can be your class or level, your race or gender, even your age or name can be changed. It can only do two things at once, so just keep that in mind.”

I look down at the mask and stare intently as I try to discern the inner workings of the magic mask. I squint my eye and use Magical Aura Perception to try and find something, but nothing aura related is present. It’s a magic my class doesn’t understand, and I find that irritating.

  I sigh and trigger Observe-

  (Observe) has leveled up! (4 → 5)

  (Identity Mask)

I smile creeps onto my face as I realize what happened. It gave me the item's name and didn’t just say enchanted mask! Wait, doesn’t that mean I can figure out the name of my armour now?

I look down and use Observe.

  (Plot Armour)

This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

  “...”

  “Um, what’s wrong Tiff?”

I squint my eye at the elf woman. I’d be so god damned pissed if that wasn’t so god damned funny. I sigh, “Nothing important.” I put the mask back on. “Let’s get out of here.”

Me and Eva then gathered the mushrooms. We didn’t have anything to carry them, so we had to get creative. I stuffed as many as I could into my breast plate and other wedges I might have had in my armour. Eva had some compartments in her robes that she used to carry even more mushrooms.

After we had gathered all the ‘important necessities,’ we made our way to the edge of the wall.

Eva craned her head past me. “You said you had a way out?”

I smile down at her, “Yep!” and vanish as I Instant Position outside of the cube.

(Instant Position) has leveled up! (8 → 9)

  Neat-

My feet land on blackened grass and I duck down. I quietly sink in the black foliage and look at the icy soul I saw previously.

I stop as a deep guttural breathing reverberates throughout the room. The ground trembles and dust is kicked up. I go prone and try to make my presence as small as possible.

I lift my head above the grass and see a wall of light blue fur wrapped around the entire room. White bone-like protrusion sticking out at random. I turn my head as the length of the beast just keeps going and going. I spotted its heads after turning all the way around.

A cone of frost burst from its nose as it gently stirs in its sleep. One head resting on top of the other.

  (Atrocious Wyrm / ???)

Perfect, it’s asleep. Now is the best time to escape.

I use Linked Soul to Instant Position Eva to me. I caught her and covered her mouth before she could yelp. I brought a finger to my lips and pointed to the massive serpent heads. Her eyes widened when she saw the monster.

I then quickly move us with Instant Position to the edge of the room and again to get us into a separate cave entirely. I collapse to the ground as my mana nearly runs out from using the skill six times in a row. Using the skill with Linked Soul seems to drain mana much faster than just using Instant position on myself.

Eva lets out a sigh of relief, “That was scary.”

  “Yeah it was!”

Eva is the first to get back up and straightens her robes. She then offers a hand to help me get back up. I look at the hand for a moment then shift to her eyes. I groan, “Other hand.”

She looks down at her right hand as she slowly processes what I just said. Eva's ears turn red with embarrassment and switches to her left. I grab onto it and pull myself up.

I grin at her, “That wasn’t so hard. I’m still curious if it would attack us if it were awake.”

“I’m not nearly as curious as you. If I ever see another abominable monster again. It would be too soon.”

“Well, we're not out of the dungeon yet, so there are still plenty of opportunities to get traumatized again.”

  Eva frowns, “That’s not comforting.”

“Ha! If comedy and tragedy got into a fist fight, who do you think would win?”

She blinks at the sudden strange question, unable to answer it because she doesn’t understand the question. I know what she would say if she did understand. Eva thinks tragedy would win.

  And she’s wrong-

“Comedy wins, every time. That’s why it’s called the last laugh!”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“I’m saying, I’m glad you’re alive Eva. And I know that you don't have much time left, so I’m asking you to make it count. Smile awhile see?”

She tilts her head at me. I’m not sure if she got it, but I think I just needed to say it.

I turn, my black fire lighting the way ahead. We walk away from the terrible prison of that abominable demon king. Like two great heroes ending the demon's 2000 year reign as the false king of Soteria.

  Fucking mythical-

  ---

We traveled about an hour away from that place with the massive cube. Eva finally felt safe enough to perform another demon summoning to get a Nav Imp to guide us out of the dungeon.

This one had blue hair and was nearly a foot and a half tall. His name was Ahpuch, but mostly kept to himself.

We went on to travel for another day-

  “Soooo, what’s it do?”

Eva tilts her head, “What does what do?”

“Your title, Kings Fall. You got a title skill with it?”

She nods her head, slightly still impressed with herself. “That I did. It’s called-” She stops in her tracks and I stop to look at her. Eva strokes the bottom of her mask. “Actually, how about I show you?”

I light up at that, “Hell yeah!”

Eva reaches out with her hand towards me. I excitedly grin as I wait for whatever is about to happen. I feel something about me snap as Eva chants a word.

  “Dethrone.”

Alert / Title (Titan’s End) has been sealed

I blink at the new notification, “No fucking way.”

Eva chuckles, “Yes fucking way. Check your status.”

I open my system and my jaw drops at what I see. “My stat bonuses are gone! And my title skill!”

“The effect lasts for nearly 30 minutes, but I can only do it once a day. Although, it only works against those with the same rarity of my title or lower.”

“That’s still awesome. Wait, what’s the title's rarity?”

“It’s mythical. I never thought I would ever get a title so incredibly rare.”

It’s mythical huh? My title is legendary, so that means mythical is more rare. “How do rarities even work?”

“You don’t-” Eva steps to the side, then suddenly snaps into lecture mode. “The rarities exist in two places. Your traits and your titles. They obviously tell you how rare the traits or titles are, but they also act as a hierarchy. From weakest to strongest it goes, common, uncommon, rare, very rare, legendary, mythical, exotic, and unique. The rarer the title or trait, the stronger it is.”

I blink at the elf woman as I’m suddenly dumped with information.

  “Huh…”

  ---

We travel for another two days-

  “Do you have any family?”

I look at Eva as she sits across from me with a campfire between us. The dried skin of an abominable mole used to fuel it. I frown at her question-

  “Yes, I do but…”

I’ll never get to see them again. I’m in a completely different world now and maybe I can get back with magic, but I don’t know if that’s possible. I don’t really feel concerned about it though. If I really wanted to go back, I probably would have picked The Way of Space for my class advancement.

I love my family, but I don’t mind if I never see them again. It’s not like they’re dead. I bet they are sad when they find out I've disappeared. I wonder if they will uncover all the terrible things I did.

I find myself pretty apathetic about it, but think my silence gave off a different impression-

“I’m sure you’ll see them again one day.”

Eva attempt’s to reassure me, but I don’t want to give her the wrong idea. “It’s okay, I don’t think I’ll ever see them again… What about your family Eva?”

Eva flinches at that and I grimace as well. Did I really just say that right after her brother died in front of her? What the fuck is wrong with me?

Eva stammers, “Yes, um- You see-”

“You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”

Eva studies me for a moment before smiling, “No, I’ll tell you about it.” Eva takes a deep breath as she seems like she's about to drop something big. I raise an eyebrow at the moment she takes to prepare herself.

“My father is the emperor of the Zeta Empire. I’m the 336th daughter.”

My mind comes to a screeching halt. Dozens of ideas and recontextualizations of past events line themselves as questions that I need answered. I don’t ask any questions because a simple fact overwhelms everything.

“That’s a lot of fucking kids!”

Eva blinks at me, “I- I suppose it is. Did you not hear what I said?”

“Yeah yeah, your dad’s the emperor or whatever- What’s it like with that many siblings?”

“Well, um-” She stops then tilt’s her head, “You do realize that I’m directly tied to the empire, right? You’re not bothered at all by the fact you are practically directly enslaved to the empire of elves? The elves that kill and enslave humans en masse.”

I smile at the elf in front of me. “I didn’t enslave myself to the Zeta Empire or whatever, I enslaved myself to you. I don’t care what the empire does to humans. They might be humans, but I don’t know them, so why should I care.”

“You don’t think what the elves are doing is cruel?”

“Oh, no! They are absolutely horrid for doing that to humans, just because they are humans. I just don’t think it’s my responsibility.”

“And what if they hurt someone you care about?”

I pause at that. I feel something deep within me strain. My eye becomes serious as I stare at Eva, “I would kill all of them.”

Eva pulls back at the sudden shift in my mood. I frown, the tension in the room seems to have suddenly skyrocketed. I sigh, relieving some of it. I try to think of something to say to get the mood out of this funk, but thankfully Eva breaks the tension for me with a question.

“You know about the empire, what about your home. What’s it like there?”

I grin as I realize that this is the perfect opportunity I was looking for. “Aside from being an entirely different world, pretty boring I would have to say.”

Eva tilted her head, “Oh, I see…”

I look at Eva as she looks back down at the fire. Her gold eyes glint in the flames as the gears of her mind slowly process what I just said. The moment feels eternal as giddiness fills me.

Eva furrows her brows and looks at me as confusion fills her face. I simply point at the collar on my neck and attempt to wink.

  She blinks, “What the fuck?!-”

  ---

  We travel for another day-

You have slain a (Abominable Mole / level 21)

  -

  Very little experience rewarded

  You have slain a (Star-Nosed Abomination / level 39)

  -

  Less experience rewarded

  …

  You have leveled up! (48 → 49)

  -

You have earned (5) stat points

  “Oh! I leveled up!”

  “Congratulations.”

  I smile at Eva, “Thanks!”

  “That-” Eva sighs, “Nevermind.”

I pull the new dark soul-sledge I made from the corpse of the Star-Nosed Abomination. Red blood slicks off it as I swing it over my shoulder. I look down at my new hand I made with Soul Conjuration.

I slowly open and close it. I frown-

  This hand sucks!

I have to constantly use Magical Aura Manipulation with Soul Conjuration to get it to move like a normal hand. I honestly better off extending a soul-tendril from the end of my arm. It’s easier to manipulate than each individual finger of a soul-hand. Whatever-

The fake hand recedes and rejoins my soul. Eva and the Nav Imp walk past me. The Nav Imp speaks in a raspy voice.

  “We’re almost there.”

I grin and follow close behind. We turn a corner and find moonlight streaming in from a collapsed part of the cave. Eva and the demon go ahead of me and up the small passage to the surface.

I crawl through the tight gap in the rock and push myself out of the ground. Looking out to the night sky for the first time, my eye widens.

Massive brilliant white cracks extend through the sky, the stars helplessly dangle between them. The cracks twist together as they end at the greyish moon at the center, flowing into it. Two smaller moons sit on either side of the bigger grey moon. One glowing a lime green, and the other a deep red.

  “Woah-”

“Alright, the contract is up! Eat my ass!”

The Nav Imp is pulled out of existence before I could even react to the sudden yelling. Me and Eva stare at the spot the demon once was.

Eva burst’s out laughing next to me and I turn to her. “Why are you laughing?! He- He ruined the moment!” I chuckled through the last bit as I said it. Eva grabs my shoulder.

“You just looked so awe struck!”

We ended up sharing a moment laughing together. I’m so glad she has brought me to this world, and I’m excited about what I’ll see next.

I want to see all of-

I stop laughing and blink, “Wait a minute, what is this world even called?”

“You don’t know? But what about?-” She looks at me confused, but then she steps out in front of me and smiles. “Right, you’re not from this world, so let me formally introduce you!”

I almost get lost in Eva’s soft expression as she speaks, “Welcome to Ydri!”

The silence suddenly becomes deafening as I’m pulled out of a daydream.

  “What did you just say?-”
