New Interests (IV)

As they descended the stairs, they could see and hear some of commotion from a different area of the restaurant.

One of the poor waiters was soaked but still politely bowing while the manager was trying to get the customers to calm down. The waiter had likely tried to calm the situation before having something thrown at him.

The two extravagant looking customers were still causing chaos even though one man’s face was changing colour with what looked like a rash forming on his arms and face.

“What going on here?” calmly asked Kamaria as she approached the scene.

The manager was about to assure her like another customer and let her get to her table, but he paused when he turned and saw the origin of the voice.

From the corner of his eye, he noticed the young master nodding to him from upstairs. These people had received special treatment from the young master after all so maybe it was better to explain the situation to them.

“It’s not much my Lady; we’ve called in a physician to come and check the situation for our patron.”

With Kamaria’s knowledge, the closest clinic in the area with available physicians would take about half an hour to get a physician to the restaurant and that was if they had someone available who could travel to the location.

It was better to just deal with the situation since the people were making a fuss. If it was so serious, instead of making trouble here, they would have rushed the man to a clinic already. Judging by their clothing and their table they had surely come in a carriage.

“I’m a physician, let me have a look,” she said while walking towards the table.

“Your restaurant is poisoning people and now you’re trying to waste time with a shameless little girl here!” shouted the man who was accompanying the apparently poisoned man.

“If you want something done about this, I suggest you shut up and let her check what’s wrong,” said Tariq.

The words were calmly delivered but his intimidating appearance and that of the henchman with him prompted everyone into silence even the chattering customers. Kamaria then took the thinnest little gloves out of her bag.

The man was a bit hesitant at first, but he gave her his arm when she prompted. After checking his arms, face, eyes and even tongue, she paused for a few moments.

“We need a few clean cloths soaked in ice water,” she said while looking at the manager.

The man could only nod and hurriedly send one of the waiters. Not every little restaurant had the luxury of ice, but Kamaria knew that they would have some here since some of their drinks and even food could be served cold.

The customers waited with bated breath at this development.

“Is there anything that you know that you’ve never eaten here?” she asked as she turned to look at the food.

“W-we’ve come here plenty of times. Are you daring to suggest that we don’t know-”

“That’s not what I asked,” she said after turning to look sat the man who was complaining.

These people were simply too proud to admit that they had something they had never eaten before. Where was the shame in admitting that they tried something new.

No one knew all the treasures of the world after all whether it was jewels or food. The man was a bit frightened by the dead eyed look of the young lady.

“We, we ordered some pineapple as an extra in the platter,” muttered the man.

A little waiter came back with a bucket of cloths swimming in ice water. What an inconvenient time for Lili and Raisa to be away. These people could understandably not operate with the efficiency that Kamaria was used to.

Without a word, she wrung the cold things and put them on the man’s arms and neck. The person who had felt like rolling himself on the floor finally had a bit of relief.

“This is not a poisoning, nor does it mean the food was contaminated, it’s just an adverse reaction,” she said while still wringing more cloths.

  “Adverse reaction?” asked the manager.

“It’s the body rejecting something it came into contact with that normally would be harmless to most people.”

She took off the gloves while continuing to explain.

“It’s just like how some people start sneezing and develop a blocked nose and watery eyes during spring or when they’re near flowers even though most people are completely fine. This man’s body doesn’t agree with this fruit, that’s why only one of them had this reaction.”

She stood up and started looking through her bag.

“Luckily, it’s not serious. If it was serious enough, his throat would have swelled making him unable to breathe and well… Anyway, this was not anyone’s fault, we can never know what would make us sick until we’ve contacted it, especially if doesn’t harm other people. It’s not common but it does happen.”

A few of the customers nodded in understanding and a little bit of astonishment at the young lady’s explanation. It turned out that she was well versed in treating people.

Her methods and speech seemed a little unconventional and audacious, but she wasn’t a random village healer or radical witch doctor.

“Apply this ointment on the rash as often as you need to and it should be gone in less than three days,” she said while taking out a small porcelain bottle from the small case in her pouch.

As a practicing physician, this was a compact case she kept on her in case of small emergencies.

  “However, there’s a consultation fee.”

Before she could continue, they realised that a few men that looked like city guards had entered the restaurant. It was really too much excitement for the day.

The commotion caused by people watching from outside as well should have attracted the attention of the patrolling guards.

“Don’t worry, I’ll send the bill later,” whispered Kamaria to the patient.

Before he could gather his thoughts and ask how she would find him, the doctor had already disappeared.

“It seems rather lively in here Master Walid,” said a middle-aged looking nobleman in the lead.

“Magistrate welcome, it’s a situation that’s been handled. One of our customers just had a medical emergency.”

The man addressed as Magistrate nodded before looking around at the situation. Indeed, there were no signs of fighting or a struggle of any sort.

He could see the customer who had been treated being helped up and waiters trying to clean up the area however there seemed to be something missing.

The young man with him was also trying to decipher the scene before he was scolded later for being unobservant. There was a patient but… As he was thinking, a slightly bitter scent of herbs and flowers suddenly caught his attention.

He turned just in time to catch a fluttering veil at the corner of his eye but he was only left with the distinct scent and a vague impression of a female figure walking past him.

“Since everything has been handled, is there any space for my apprentice and I today?”

“Oh, of course Magistrate, right this way,” said the manager while showing them the way up the stairs.

The guards were dismissed and the man was helped outside while everything else resumed its original state including the low chattering of the customers. The young Lord watching from upstairs, returned to his room with a slight smile.
